Build Year: 1948

Make and Model: EMD SW-1 600 Horsepower

Weight: 120 tons

Zanesville & Western's 8599, with builders number 5676, was the last of a series of 200 SW1's delivered originally to the Pennsylvania Railroad in April, 1948 and was built at the shops in LaGrange, Ill.  It was originally numbered 5999 by the PRR, but later renumbered 8599 by the Penn Central.  During the fourteen year SW1 production, run changes and improvements took place increasing reliability, easing maintenance and modifying external appearances, including sealed-beam headlights and flat-top cab windows.

Zanesville & Western's 8599 had undergone a number of changes before being obtained.  Her original friction bearing trucks were replaced with roller bearings, increasing reliability.  Her single "glow" head and rear lights were replaced with dual 32 volt sealed beams and associated dimming resistor network.  And, her air compressor lubrication system was modified such that it obtains continuous lubrication from the prime movers lube-oil system eliminating the need to check the compressor crankcase oil level.  Little else has been changed since 1948.  After her 25 year dedication to Buckeye Central she will now become ZWSR's prime motive power.  The historic ZWSX 8599 carries on today as a true reminder of American diesel-electric locomotive production in its infancy.

Build Year: November, 1968

Make and Model: Extended Vision Caboose

Weight: 35 tons

Zanesville & Western's 3187, was originally built for use by the C & O Railroad, by International Car of Kenton, Ohio. The 3100 series steel cabooses was a first for C & O.  This car was at its peak of technology at the time.  Equipped with roller bearing trucks and generator along with fully welded body this series changed cabooses forever.  The 3187 was shipped new for use to Silver Grove, Kentucky.  This caboose was upgraded to electronic marker lights and had a stationary toilet installed in 1979.  This caboose was acquired by a local car dealership and donated to The Buckeye Central in 1991.  The caboose has since been used as a rolling office for the new railroad.  ZWSR has plans to bring this caboose into normal passenger service on the Glass Rock Spur.  This caboose has an interesting history.  We are proud to own this piece of history in almost perfect condition.

Zanesville & Western's 5218, built in 1937 for Canadian National Railroad.  This coach was used at high speeds across Canada.  Inside is still French and English signage and markings.  These coaches were designed for luxury travel.  They are equipped with electrical lighting, heating, cooling, and running water. Although these features can not be used with our current locomotive they are still present inside the coach.  ZWSR acquired these from Buckeye Central who purchased them from Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.  They have had several modifications and have undergone many changes since the original acquisition.  The spirit of Canadian National is still felt inside these coaches while you ride in luxury down the Glass Rock Spur.

ZWSX MOW 1200

ZWSX MOW 1200

Call Sign: ZWSX MOW 1200

Build Year:1960's

Make and Model: FWD Chassis

Weight: 35,000 lbs

At some point this MOW vehical was used by the United States Army as it still has the Army markings. Although it has a FWD chassis, both the upper and lower power units are Ford Industrial Gasoline Engines. It is a 6x6 by design but has the front drive axle disabled at this time. It requires two operators, one for the chassis and one for the cutting unit. It was manufactured with two independant hydraulic systems, one for the Hyrail gear and one for the cutting unit. It has since been modified to sharing a common source.

The brush cutting unit operates at 2000 psi pressure rotating up to 6 single pivoting blades. It can cut brush and trees up to 10" in diameter. It will mulch anything in it's path and leaves very little debris.
